Each contribution to Life After Justice helps us free the wrongfully convicted and restore their lives after justice.

This fall, LAJ will direct contributions toward two critical projects that will help to inform the national conversation around wrongful conviction:

LAJ National Survey Of Wrongfully Convicted Individuals and their Loved Ones.  LAJ advocates for building an ecosystem of holistic support for wrongfully convicted individuals and their families. There is an urgent need to truly understand the experiences and challenges faced by this unique community in various aspects of their lives. Through this project, LAJ will contact wrongfully convicted individuals and their loved ones nationwide to examine the individual, relational, communal, and societal factors that led to their wrongful convictions, the systems that helped or harmed impacted individuals, and the long-term implications of wrongful convictions for individuals and communities. Through this project led by impacted individuals, we aim to gather collective data and experience to advocate for policies and programs grounded in truth rather than  conjecture.

LAJ National Incentivized Witness Database. An incentivized witness is any witness who testifies against the defendant based on the promise of receiving a benefit or avoid potential threats. Despite being a leading cause of wrongful convictions, research and policy reforms in this area have been very limited. At LAJ, we are committed to addressing this pervasive issue. We are currently undertaking a comprehensive study to shed light on the problem, with the intention of using our research findings to develop effective solutions. Our deep concern stems from the countless lives shattered by wrongful convictions based on questionable incentivized testimony, while the use of incentivized witnesses remains largely unregulated. We firmly believe that our Incentivized Witnesses Project holds immense potential to advance our mission of eradicating wrongful convictions through data-driven efforts.
